When the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey was released in 1968, its makers presumed that we'd have bases on the moon and all be wearing orange tunics within thirty years. It's a very attractive vision of the future, but it's a little out of date.

Earth's only natural satellite, the Moon, has helped people keep time for thousands of years. More moon news.
A Brief History of the Moon
The moon has been an entity that has played an important role in many facets of human history ranging from spiritual beliefs to the natural sciences. It is the only natural satellite of the Earth, as well as the largest entity in the sky, which is why it is no surprise that it has been a focal point for so long. Just like it's history within our societies, it is also has a history of it's own. Here is a brief history of the moon – both it's own and it's impact on our society.
One thing that has to be understood about the history of the moon is that it is impossible to make many statements with absolute certainty This makes looking at the physical makeup the moon, the best way to try and determine its history. The popular theory about the moon is that it was formed because a giant impact on Earth nearly 3.8 billion years ago and a portion of the Earths crust was sent into space forming the moon. This theory is popular because the Earth and the moon have nearly identical isotopic compositions, whereas other planets, such as Mars, are very different. The other popular theory is that the Moon and Earth were co-created together from an accretion disk, however this theory has several shortcomings that are hotly debated.
Since its creation, there have been a number of collisions with meteors which is evident from the numerous impact craters on the surface. To date, there are more than 300,000 documented impact craters that are wider than 1 kilometer. There have also been a number of volcano-like erupts as well, however it is theorized that the most recent ones took place about 1.2 billion years ago.
For a brief history of the moon and how it has affected civilization, most people theorize that it became a focal point sometime in the 5th century BC. This is when it was first integrated into Babylonian astronomers. There is also documentation showing that in the 4th century BC, Shi Shen, a Chinese astronomer created a way to predict eclipses (both solar and lunar). Since then, the moon has played in instrumental role in a wide variety of areas of society ranging from Aristotle's groundbreaking description of the universe to space race between the Soviets and the United States. It also played a key role in many religions across the globe. It has also played a large role in defining our current calendar, methods of keeping time, been a central player in many great works of art and literature, and even given rise to the mental condition known as lunacy (first popularized by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder).
As you can see, a brief history of the moon could potentially cover a wide range of topics both in terms of the moon as a physical presence as well as how it has affected numerous societies. It has undergone millions of physical changes since its creation and played a role in every society as far back as Babylonians and likely even farther.
